International Atemi Jujitsu - We don't break boards - so why is that?

Simple answer, we don't know how to. Board breaking, brick smashing in fact, general violence against all forms of defenceless masonry and wood requires special training; unless of course you enjoy breaking any of the 27 bones in your hand. Yes it's impressive and yes it takes a lot of skill and determination (when done correctly) but breaking isn't our thing so we don't do it - kudos to those that do, just ensure your training insurance is up to date.

So who are we?

International Atemi Jujitsu is a UK based jujitsu organisation running jujitsu and sport ju-jitsu clubs in the Luton and Dunstable areas of Bedfordshire. We offer a no nonsense approach to self defence with one of the oldest and most versatile of martial arts.

A non political organisation, the IAJJ enjoys excellent relationships with visiting instructors from other organisations and styles, not jus jujitsu. We have had students from Boxing, Kickboxing, Thai Boxing, Judo, Karate, Wing Chun, Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do and Tai Chi training with us - and we actively encourage this cross fertilization of martial knowledge.

Our Standards

Students abilities are measured by how they apply themselves during training sessions and under examination. We all progress at different rates so, with this in mind:

  • we do not enforce regular, timetabled grading sessions
  • we do not continually access students with a view to grading
  • some students may choose not to grade

When an instructor thinks a student is ready and the student agrees, then they grade - not before.

This produces a pressure free atmosphere relaxed atmosphere in which to train, rushing headlong towards an enforced grading, one that students are ill-prepared for and one that they are likely to fail.

Our Philosophy

We make no outrageous claims or false promises - we teach jujitsu, pure and simple and we're not afraid to absorb techniques from other styles to enhance the overall learning experience.

We have no illustrious pedigree of grand masters or pseudo grandmasters. Our lineage owes its existence to our instructors exacting standards and the underlying essence of jujitsu itself, both in historical terms and its continuing evolution.

We guarantee nothing. If you ask us: 'when will I get my black belt?,' we'll answer honestly that 'we don't know'.'

There are no assumptions, our instructors can't tell when a student walks through the door whether they are black belt material, no one can, even those that tell you otherwise. Anyway if when will I get my black belt? is your sole motivation for taking up a martial art you need to re-think your objectives.

Our Methods

It takes 7 to 10 years of hard training to earn a senior black belt with us. Juniors can grade for a cadet black belt - black belt with a white stripe - but then to qualify for a full black belt they must re-grade at senior level when they reach eighteen. So, if you're after a quickie black belt, then we suggest you look elsewhere!

All our senior black belts are graded by independent examiners outside of our organisation, usually by the AMA Jujitsu Technical & Advisary Committee.

We also follow the traditional system regarding 'dan grades' and the minimum number of years between grades.

We don't market, promote or advertise a 'system' nor do we produce IAJJ related videos, books, CD roms or clothing for sale to the public. Students are not required to sign a yearly or monthly contract - you pay as you train and if your don't train it costs you nothing, except the price of your license and uniform. And we definitely don't endorse or support 'distance learning courses' or the individuals who market such nonsense. The only way to learn what we teach is to train with us - pure and simple.

If you'd like to try us then check out the 'training venues' link for club and training times.
